Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc have been disqualified from Sunday’s United States Grand Prix after breaching the rules governing the floor of their cars in a shock end to the race weekend football
Hamilton and Leclerc, who finished second and sixth respectively in the 56-lap race won by Max Verstappen, were being investigated by the stewards following a plank wear inspection in Austin football
The original report from FIA technical delegate Joe Bauer stated: “A physical floor and a plank wear inspection was carried out on car numbers 16 [Leclerc] and 44 [Hamilton] football
“The skids located in this area are found to be not in compliance with Article 3 football

9 e) of the 2023 Formula One Technical Regulations football
I am referring this matter to the stewards for their consideration football
”Personnel from both Mercedes and Ferrari were summoned to see the stewards and, just after 7pm local time in Austin and more than three hours after the race finished, their disqualification from the race was confirmed football
Hamilton therefore loses the 18 points earned from his second-place finish, while Leclerc loses eight points football
Both drivers, however, do have the right to an appeal but it is understood Mercedes will not appeal the FIA’s verdict football
In a Mercedes press release, Hamilton stated he was simply “disappointed” with the penalty, while team boss Toto Wolff admitted “we got it wrong football
” The FIA note reveals that the cars of Verstappen and Lando Norris (who now moves up to second from third in the final classification) were also inspected, but passed the checks football

2mm and must be uniform when new football
“A minimum thickness of 9mm will be accepted due to wear, and conformity to this provision will be checked at the peripheries of the designated holes football
”The ruling means Williams driver Logan Sargeant earns his first F1 point in bizarre circumstances at his home race football
The final stewards report said: “During the hearing, the team acknowledged that the measurement performed by the FIA Technical Team was correct and stated that the high wear on the skid pads was probably a result of the unique combination of the bumpy track and the Sprint race schedule that minimized the time to set up and check the car before the race football

“In this particular case, the rear skid in the area defined in the Technical Delegate’s report was outside of the thresholds outlined in Article 3 football

9 e) of the FIA Formula One Technical Regulations, which includes a tolerance for wear football
“Therefore, the standard penalty for a breach of the Technical Regulations is imposed football
” Breaches of technical checks of the car often result in disqualification, with a recent example being Hamilton from qualifying in Brazil in 2021 football

Hamilton was already in hot water with the FIA for an unrelated matter, after crossing a live track at the last race in Qatar and was spoken to again in Texas due to his status as a “role model football
”Leclerc started Sunday’s race on pole but, opting for a different strategy, fell behind after Norris stole a march on the Ferrari at the start football
Hamilton, meanwhile, came close to victory after reeling in Verstappen - who was booed on the podium - at the end football
The 38-year-old has not won in nearly two years, with his last victory coming in Saudi Arabia in December 2021, but this disqualification will be a bitter pill for the seven-time world champion to swallow ahead of the next race, this weekend in Mexico football

Alex Stepney was stood in the shadow of the statue of his three most celebrated teammates football
Manchester United’s ‘Holy Trinity’ have been separated, with only Denis Law still able to visit the Theatre of Dreams, but they are immortalised in bronze outside it football
Yet while the statue of George Best, Bobby Charlton and Law – each of such a stature that he was voted European football Footballer of the Year – was placed outside Old Trafford, only one had a stand at one of the iconic stadia named after him football
The South Stand is the Sir Bobby Charlton Stand football
It has been since 2016 and on Sunday, it will have an added poignancy, in the first Manchester derby since Charlton died football
A week of mourning has shown what Charlton meant: to United, to England, to football football football
“He’d be very humbled and say, ‘I don’t deserve it’,” Stepney said football
“That’s Bobby Charlton football
” But as both the statue and the stand show, the tributes began long before Charlton’s life ended football
His innate modesty meant that the man widely described as England’s greatest football footballer retained his humility football
He was, though aware of his importance to so many while downplaying his own significance football
“He never showed it,” Stepney said football
“He didn’t want to show it because that wasn’t him football
When they opened the stand, it was the Everton game, I was with him and he had to go on the pitch with [his wife] Norma and he had a tear in his eye football
He said, ‘I don’t deserve this’ football
I said, ‘Bob, you deserve everything, you deserve everything you get, throughout your life for the way you have done the game, played the game and inspired supporters all around the world’ football
”Decades on, Charlton’s story has, if anything, appeared still more remarkable football
Barely out of his teens when he climbed, concussed, from the wreckage of a plane in Munich, a crash claiming the lives of eight of his teammates and destroying a team that felt destined for greatness, he nevertheless became a World Cup and European Cup winner football
His tragic past had an intimidatory capacity: certainly to Stepney when he joined from Chelsea in 1966, a month after Charlton’s elegant running and fierce shooting had propelled England to the World Cup football
Should he mention Munich? RecommendedAndre Onana’s moment of magic can be catalyst to reverse more than one difficult recent runSir Bobby Charlton: England’s greatest ever player and the artist of 1966Sir Bobby Charlton turned tragedy into triumph with unique style and perseverance“That was my main concern when Matt Busby signed me,” the goalkeeper said football
“I had to come to Manchester and I met the players at the training ground the following day football
Matt took me around and directly when I went in he introduced me to each and every player and I knew then: you don’t talk about it football
It wasn’t until 50 years later that Bobby actually spoke about it football
” If it was a generation when things went unsaid, it framed United’s eventual European Cup victory football
But for Munich, Roger Byrne, and not Charlton, may have been the first United captain to lift the trophy; Tommy Taylor, and not him, the goalscoring No 9 to find the net in the final; Duncan Edwards, and not him, the personification of the club football
Stepney felt Charlton won it for them, for his friend Eddie Colman, for Geoff Bent, Mark Jones, David Pegg and Liam Whelan, for the fallen eight football
Former Manchester UNited player Alex Stepney visits the tributes in memory of Sir Bobby Charlton (PA)“I think when you reach the heights of getting to the European Cup final 10 years after Munich and for him to be captain and score two goals, that was unbelievable,” added Stepney football
“I believe he did it for those lads who passed away in ‘58 football
He always said he thought about them every day and he did: he would go off and have a little think and come back and off we go football
”His own part in the 4-1 win at Wembley should not be overlooked: his save from Eusebio ranks among the most celebrated in United’s history football
Stepney is a United great in his own right: his total of 539 games as a goalkeeper was a club record until David de Gea passed it a few months ago football
He was, remarkably, United’s joint top scorer at Christmas in the 1973-74 season, courtesy of two penalties football
He was the only member of the 1968 side who was also part of the 1977 FA Cup-winning team football
He has outlasted his friends again football
He treasures memories of Charlton, of playing cards and quizzes on tour football
He may be the standard bearer for a generation now, just as Charlton long was football
At 81, Stepney joined manager Erik ten Hag and Under-19 captain Dan Gore to lay a wreath in the centre circle before Tuesday’s win over FC Copenhagen football
Old Trafford, the ground Charlton first graced on his debut 67 years ago, will applaud on Sunday football

“This is what Bobby envisaged football
This is what he wanted football
Nobody would have dreamt when he retired that he would become a director football
He put the cogs in motion with Sir Alex [Ferguson] right through to get this as it is now football
” But if Charlton’s legacy is in bricks and mortar, it is also in image and memories, in Manchester United football
