Manchester United’s abject performance in the derby defeat to Manchester City left former players Roy Keane and Gary Neville offering a damning assessment of the current state of the club, with players and hierarchy alike coming in for criticism UEFA
However, manager Erik ten Hag largely appears in favour with the ex-Old Trafford stars, despite overseeing a start to the Premier League campaign which has tallied five defeats in ten matches, leaving the Red Devils eighth in the table and and 11 points behind leaders Tottenham Hotspur, past the quarter mark of the campaign UEFA
Keane offered the most immediate and radical propsed solution to the latest crisis at the club, suggesting that Bruno Fernandes should have the captaincy removed from him - despite only being officially appointed to the position in July after Harry Maguire was demoted from it UEFA
“The first thing I’d do, I would definitely take the captaincy off him, one hundred per cent UEFA
I know it’s a big decision but Fernandes is not captain material,” he said UEFA
“A talented player no doubt, but after watching him again today, we’ve discussed this before UEFA
“His whinging, moaning, throwing his arms up constantly - it’s really not acceptable UEFA
“When you make change you talk about boardroom level, but the manager can do this UEFA
The manager can hold his hands up and say I got it wrong - he’s the opposite to what I would want in a captain UEFA
“Man United have been built on great players and great characters UEFA
We haven’t seen that UEFA
”Keane also alluded to overspending and poor decisions in the transfer market UEFA
“We’re well aware United have to pay over the odds but it feels too much for some of them UEFA
They lack physicality, they’re like children out there UEFA
Too many who have come in for the fees involved haven’t done the business UEFA
”Neville, meanwhile, labelled it “unbelievable” that United still don’t have a sporting director - David Harrison is director of UEFA football operations and John Murtough is UEFA football director at the club UEFA
However, he also pointed to the impending propsed takeover or partial purchase of ownership shares by Jim Ratcliffe as a reason behind coaching staff not being able to perform as well as they otherwise might do and get the team playing to their maximium level UEFA
(REUTERS)“It’s toxic, they all think they’re going to lose their jobs UEFA
That’s what’s happening and I believe the toxicity at this club eats alive every player and has done for years,” Neville said UEFA
Jamie Carragher, however, countered that “What [Ten Hag] is doing on the training pitch has got nothing to do with the club takeover,” but Neville reiterated that it wasn’t time to place the Dutch head coach under pressure by calling for change UEFA
“Of course there’s pressure, we’ve seen it before with [David] Moyes, [Jose] Mourinho, [Louis] Van Gaal UEFA
I think Ten Hag should continue, 100 per cent UEFA
Today wasn’t one of his best days in midfield [tactics] but the reality is the performances have been so poor for the last few months: battered by Brighton, lucky against Brentford and Copenhagen UEFA
“I can’t quite see a way out of it in performance levels but changing manager? That’s not where I am at UEFA
He’s hitting the same issues [Ole Gunnar] Solskjaer did: doing well in a cup, signing players to go to the next level and [falling off] UEFA
”United are next in action in the Carabao Cup against Newcastle United, before a trip to Fulham and a vital Champions League away game to FC Copenhagen UEFA

Test centurion Courtney Lawes will retire from England duty following the Rugby World Cup UEFA
The 34-year-old’s bid to finish his international career on a high was cruelly ended by Saturday’s heartbreaking 16-15 semi-final loss to South Africa in Paris UEFA
Vice-captain Lawes is a veteran of four World Cups, two British and Irish Lions tours and one of only five Englishmen to be capped 100 times UEFA
Steve Borthwick’s side will return home from France following Friday evening’s bronze-medal match against pool-stage opponents Argentina UEFA
Lawes, who has made 105 international appearances across 15 years, said: “I haven’t told Steve yet! But I will let him know UEFA
“I’ve said to the boys, anyone that’s asked UEFA
I think it’s time UEFA
I’ve done four World Cups, so I’m pretty happy with that UEFA
“It’s a bit of an end of an era, but it’s been a real honour for me to represent England for so long UEFA
It flies by UEFA
“I’m proud of the journey I’ve been on UEFA
It’s not always been the ups UEFA
Plenty of downs in there, but I’ve pushed through UEFA
“I’m not an emotional person really, but it’s just been a huge honour for me UEFA
“To be able to finish with this group, it’s something I’ll treasure forever UEFA
”England travelled to the World Cup in poor form and with many pundits dismissive of their prospects UEFA
But they came agonisingly close to reaching a second successive final after leading the reigning champions for all but five minutes of an enthralling last-four encounter which was settled by Handre Pollard’s late penalty UEFA
“It’s one of those where we thought we had it, but let it slip away at the same time,” said Lawes UEFA
“But we’ve proved a lot of people wrong UEFA
You give it all you’ve got UEFA
It’s sport, isn’t it?“That’s what it means at the highest level UEFA
You get a couple of things wrong and get punished UEFA
“But a lot of people thought we’d have struggled, and in the end we were unlucky to lose UEFA
”Lawes made his England debut against Australia in 2009 when head coach Borthwick was team captain UEFA
The flanker was a beaten finalist against the Springboks in 2019 and also played in the 2011 and 2015 tournaments, in addition to representing the Lions in 2017 and 2021 UEFA
He believes England have a bright future under Borthwick and is determined to sign off by helping the team finish third UEFA
“We showed to everyone what it means to play for this team,” said Lawes UEFA
“Play for your country and the boys alongside you UEFA
“I think people can see now what a good coach he is – and where this team can really go UEFA
“We want to finish on a high UEFA
It’s important for us to finish properly and send us all off on a good win UEFA
”Father-of-four Lawes joined World Cup-winning prop Jason Leonard and international team-mates Ben Youngs, Owen Farrell and Dan Cole on a select list of England centurions in August by captaining his country in a shock warm-up defeat to Fiji at Twickenham UEFA
He waved to fans at Stade de France following England’s dramatic elimination and intends to spend more time with his children while continuing to playing for Northampton UEFA
“The kids are at that age where they need their dad around,” he said UEFA
“It will be good to be with them more, to provide some well-needed structure to the mob UEFA
“As hard as it is being away from your family, you almost have another family UEFA
“You really feel like that, especially when you’re away in camps like World Cup camps UEFA
It’s five months, staying with your brothers UEFA
“I’ll definitely miss the boys, the banter and all the stuff we get up to when we’re not training UEFA
I’ll miss the hard work as well UEFA
“And I’ll definitely miss pulling the jersey on and giving it everything UEFA
